The woods here looked darker than they were outside the property. The trees were clustered closer together, their branches blocking out the faint moonlight that could have penetrated its way through to them. They only saw the full moon in intervals between branches before it got obscured again by the forest, as if tantalizing them.

Alex couldn’t help but notice how some of the trees encroached on the tiny dirt trail, towering above him and Blaire, as if ready to sweep them off the path with their skeletal branches.

For the most part, the woods were quiet, except for the shuffling and crunching of their own footsteps upon the small rocks and chunks of dirt, the chirping of the crickets, and an occasional night bird that Alex couldn’t identify. Their flashlight illuminated a good portion of the path ahead of them, bathing the ground and trees in a blueish light from the torch’s beam.

Blaire seemed to be much more relaxed now, the trauma from before probably subsiding. Either that, or she was too tired to possess the ability to express it. When they first left the Grayson estate behind and entered the woods, Blaire was apprehensive, pointing her flashlight in various directions between the trees, her shoulders tense, her steps small and skittish.

She even stopped a few times, focusing her light in one spot when she thought she’d seen or heard something, but Alex had assured her it was probably just an animal or her mind playing tricks on her. After just fifteen minutes of walking, she had changed from pointing the flashlight in random places to staring at the ground in front of her while walking.

“You doing okay, Blaire?” Alex asked.

His voice penetrated the silence of the woods. They had been quiet for the duration of their walk, and he thought some talking would do them both good.

“Uh-huh,” Blaire absently murmured.

“Okay. When we get back to town, we can go to the police right away and report these fuckers and have Grayson rot in prison for the rest of his life. And because of this, you and I are gonna be famous.”

He looked at her for a reaction. She chuckled weakly and muttered a meager, “Yeah.”

“So, what are you gonna buy with your million dollars?” Alex jokingly asked.

The remark evoked a smile out of her, even if just for a second.

“Hm… probably some therapy to forget about tonight,” she said with a somber tone. “What about you?”

“Well, I know what I’m not getting…” he started, waiting for Blaire to look at him before saying, “A mansion.”

Blaire let out a peal of laughter at that.

It’s a start.

He hadn’t been sure if the joke was going to work, but the reward was worth the gamble. They walked in silence for a while longer, Alex glancing at her from time to time. He thought he saw her crying a few times in his peripheral vision, so he quickly became more attentive.

No, not crying. Just really shaken up. I must be really tired to imagine things like that.
